Jai has sent us the following for our Update, I hope that you find it of interest. Please pass it on if you feel that there is somebody that you know who may be interested. Remember, Irlen lenses regulate, if, like Jai, your reactions are slow, the lenses increase his processing speed, if, however, you are hyperactive, they are likely to slow things down.Success with Irlen Filters Hi, I’m Jai, Just before I was 9 I was really having problems at school, I was diagnosed Dyslexic by an Educational Psychologist. I had been assessed by I think the whole of West Suffolk’s Education and Medical teams, they were thinking I might have Asperger’s Syndrome, I was eventually given a ‘note in lieu’ of a Statement, which listed my problems as poor reading, writing, numeracy and socialising skills. THEN I was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome. I got my ‘orange’ super specs and things began to change, quite slowly over the first year, but really quite a difference, my reading age went from 6.1 years to 8.4 in that year. THEN I changed schools. Not to any special or private school, in fact I went to my local Middle School which was about to be put in Special Measures – not a good move you would think – but College heath Middle School is special. The teachers here believed in me – they were open to Irlen and could see my potential. It took a little while for me to regain by belief in myself and get back the confidence I had lost but by the end of my first year I was feeling good about myself and making some real progress. It had become obvious how much my Irlen Filters were helping because every time they faded – my teachers and my Mum and Dad could notice I became slower, not able to concentrate so well, so back I’d go and get my filters checked. We now have an extra set ready to change as soon as my ‘fresh’ set were in my frames back I went to ‘normal’. After a good year 5, I started year 6 with a really positive attitude, I knew if I tried hard, I would do ok. So spelling is still a problem but even that’s getting better. By the time SAT’s came around, I felt good. I wanted to do well, I believed I would do well. Guess what, I did, English – level 5 Science – level 5 Maths - level 4 So for all those who have recently got their filters – hang in there – work hard and you will be a winner too. |
